Mullinavat 3-13 Ballyhale Shamrocks 1-9

Mullinavat under 21 hurlers advanced to the southern semi final by defeating Ballyhale Shamrocks in Piltown today. The victory was never in doubt but there is huge room for improvement if this team is to progress in this competition. They now await the winners of Thomastown v John Lockes and this game will provide a much sterner test than the one received today. Mullinavat were guilty of too much short passing and time and time again they were blocked down by the Shamrocks . With the conditions deteriorating from now on a much more direct approach will be required.
Mullinavat led from the start and led by 0-5 to 0-0 after 14 minutes, thanks to points from Liam Fennelly, Ger Malone (2) and Mark Mansfield (2 frees). Shamrocks first score came from a free by Richie Reid midway through the half. Richie pointed a '65 and then Shamrocks drew level when Ronan Corcoran finished to the net. Mullinavat's response was swift and within a minute Mark Mansfield pointed to edge his side ahead. Conor Walsh pointed from a sideline to level matters in the twentyfifth minute. Mullinavat edged ahead through a Conor Duggan point. This was followed by a point from Mossy Jones. Finally Liam Fennelly's hard work was rewarded when he found John Walsh with a good pass and John finished to the net to leave Mullinavat in front at the break on a scoreline of 1-8 to 1-3.
Mullinavat decided on a more direct approach in the second half and this immediately paid dividends when a long ball from Mark Mansfield found Mossy Jones on the edge of the square and Mossy expertly turned his marker and finished to the net. Mark Mansfield added a point  straight from the restart and Mullinavat were coasting to victory. Mikey Jones who was having a storming game at corner back then scored the point of the game when he ran on to a pass from Mark Mansfield and pointed from close to the sideline. Mullinavat were now dominant and Darren Waters finished a long ball from Simon Aylward to the net in the tenth minute. Shamrocks could only reply with two points from Conor Walsh and Richie Reid. The game was effectively over and the game petered out over the last ten minutes. three points from Richie Reid frees were cancelled out by three points from Mark Mansfield as Mullinavat ran out comfortable winners. Best for Mullinavat were Mikey Jones , Simon Aylward, Mark Mansfield and Ger Maloine.
