Minors draw in a thriller

posted 14 Aug 2012, 15:17 by Tom Duggan
Mullinavat minors dug out a thrilling draw in the preliminary round of the championship against Clara tonight . The two teams went point for point throughout the game and were level at half time and on eleven occasions during the game. It was fitting that neither side should lose and that they earned the right to have another game to decide who progresses in the championship. Mullinavat were forced to play without Darren Waters who was injured and he was a big loss to the team. Mullinavat began brightly and had two points on the board in the first two minutes from Mark and Adam Mansfield. Clara edged ahead with a goal and a point from Chris Bolger who would end up with a total of 1-14 to his credit, 0-9 from frees. Mark Mansfield was equally impressive for Mullinavat and he contributed 1-10 of his sides scores with 1-7 coming from frees. At half time the sides were level , Clara 1-7 Mullinavat 0-10. As the game entered the final quarter Clara had pulled four points clear and it was looking ominous for Mullinavat. Then Mullinavat were awarded a 20 metre free and Mark Mansfield buried the ball in the net to leave just a point in it. Up stepped Patrick Murphy with his third point of the night to level the game once again. From there to the end it was nip and tuck and when John Walsh put Mullinavat ahead as the game entered injury time we hoped it might be enough to edge it but Chris Bolger who was outstanding for Clara pointed a free to earn his side a draw.
Well done to both sides for providing a very entertaining game and if Mullinavat can find a bit more the next day they can have a reasonable hope of making progress.
For Mullinavat, Mikey Jones had a great game at full back. Brian Phelan stuck manfully to his task but had his hands full with his opponent. John Walsh came thundering into the game in the second half and made an important contribution. Mark Mansfield was good throughout the game and he had good support from Adam Mansfield and Patrick Murphy. Liam Fennelly was starved of possession at full forward and made a big improvement when moved to midfield.
