League champions Mullinavat received a major fright last weekend when a last gasp goal earned them a place in the Intermediate semi final. With two minutes of normal time remaining Mullinavat trailed by two points after a series of howlers in the Mullinavat defence saw them leak four goals to a plucky Young Irelands side.Mullinavat had by this stage clawed back an eight point deficit and were pressing strongly. Willie O Dwyer was dragged down and  when John Walsh's shot was blocked Jamie Fennelly was quickest to react and his ground shot flew to the net. Mullinavat were a point ahead and John Walsh added a super point to see off the determined challenge of Young Irelands.
Mullinavat started well and points from John Walsh and Ger Malone gave them an early lead. In the fifith minute a harmless long ball was completely fluffed by the 'Vat defence and Dick Carroll was on hand to finish to the net.Two minutes later they added a second when a long delivery from Paul Holden went all the way to the net. Mullinavat replied with a goal from a John Walsh penalty. Two points from John Walsh and Simon Aylward reduced the deficit to a point but Mullinavat defence got into another muddle and handed the ball to Paul Delahunty who gladly dispatched the sliotar to the net.. Straight from the puckout 'Irelands added a point and Mullinavat were on the ropes.
By the half time whistle sounded Mullinavat trailed by 1-9 to 3-7.
Worse was to come for Mullinavat. Sean Kehoe burst through the 'Vat defence to goal and the Gowran men added a point to go eight points clear. Mullinavat had a mountain to climb but to their credit they didn't panic and gradually clawed their way back into the game. Points from Ian Duggan, Simon Aylward and John Walsh saw the gap down to four as the game entered the final quarter. They finished strongly and outscored their opponents by 1-5 to 0-2 in the final quarter to seal their place in the semi final where they will play neighbours Tullogher Rosbercon.
